People, Skills & Community
Fair Work
People are at the heart of everything we do.
Our people are central to Johnstons of Elgin. We are committed to fair work, supporting the development of skills and creating a workplace where people are valued, supported and given opportunities to grow.
Fair pay across our operations
We are the largest textile manufacturer to sign up to the Living Wage Foundation, paying the real Living Wage across all our operations.
Paying the real Living Wage forms part of our commitment to fair work and to supporting the people who make our business what it is.
Developing skills for the future
We continue to invest in recruitment, training and personal development, helping our people build the skills and knowledge needed for the future.
Our Schools Interaction Programme gives young people an insight into our business and the diverse career opportunities within it. We also support local students through work experience and other opportunities to learn about the workplace.
We continue to develop the skills of our people through apprenticeships and professional development, helping to preserve the specialist knowledge and craftsmanship that underpin our manufacturing.
Skills are part of our future
The knowledge and experience of our people form an important part of our business.
We support ongoing learning and development so that skills can be shared, strengthened and carried forward.
This is particularly important in a business built around specialist textile manufacturing and generations of craft knowledge.
A workplace where people are heard
We operate employee consultative forums across our sites and recognise the Unite Trade Union.
These forums provide opportunities for employees to be consulted on significant issues affecting our people and our workplaces.
We believe in a workplace free from discrimination and are committed to treating our people fairly and with respect.
Supporting health and wellbeing
Our health and safety management systems are certified to the ISO 45001 standard and independently audited.
We recognise that mental health is as important as physical health. Trained mental health first aiders are available to our staff, with access to further mental health support where required.

Our approach to fair work extends beyond pay. It includes skills development, employee consultation, workplace rights and health and safety.
